Honoring History

We are here today on the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of the Anishinaabeg. We reside on land ceded in the 1854 Treaty and recognize, support, and advocate for the sovereignty of the Native Nations in this territory and beyond. This recognition does not absolve us of our role in the ongoing colonization of ancestral lands. We acknowledge that it is a small step towards reparations, and we promise to collaborate further with our Indigenous friends to help them move forward as the rightful stewards of this land.

By offering this land acknowledgment we affirm American Indian sovereignty and will work to hold the cities of Duluth, Superior, AND ourselves accountable to the needs of American Indian peoples and Nations.

This land acknowledgement was crafted in collaboration with our friends at the American Indian Community Housing Organization in Duluth, MN.
